Not as I will, but as Thou Wilt
- Some materials in this lesson were taken from https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/come-follow-me/primary?lang=eng.
- They were then arranged conveniently for printing. The “Come Follow Me” program is about self-learning and teaching. I have made outlines and other useful materials so that you may craft your own lesson with them.
The First Sacrament
For easy printing and class use, I compiled the story provided on churchofjesuschrist.org of when Jesus introduced the Sacrament. You can print, cut and handout the story so that you may read it together as a class.
- How do we remember Jesus during the sacrament?
- Why do we take the sacrament?
- So you know what the sacramental bread and water represent?
- What can we do to remember Jesus and be reverent during the Sacrament?
The Sacrament’s importance is spoken in our Hymns
I have taken verses from several sacramental hymns and put them on a sheet for printing and use in class.
Think of the Savior during Sacrament – Reminder card
To help the children think of the Savior during Sacrament, talk about their ideas and what they do to remember Him. Pass of the printed cards to make it more official and have them write their ideas down on the card so during the next sacrament they can look at it and remember.
Quote from Elder Marion G. Romney:
“The Savior . . . paid the debt for my personal sins. He paid the debt for your personal sins and for the personal sins of every living soul that ever dwelt upon the earth or that ever will dwell in mortality upon the earth”
God’s Love and plan for us
This activity could take most of the short 30 minute class and be a good recap. On the chalkboard write these scriptures and on the other side write what the scripture teaches… in jumbled order. Have the children draw a line to the correct match working together as a class.
Matthew 16:21 (Jesus’ sacrifice was necessary.)
John 3:16 (Jesus came to earth because he and Heavenly Father love us.)
John 10:17–18 (Jesus has power to lay his life down and take it up again.)
1 Peter 1:19–20 (Jesus was chosen in heaven to be our Savior.)
1 John 1:7 (The atonement of Jesus Christ cleanses us from sin if we repent.)
Why was Jesus willing to obey Heavenly Father’s plan even though he would have to endure such terrible suffering?
Doctrine and Covenants 20:77
77 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.
Doctrine and Covenants 20:79
79 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.
