I lived in Montana with 5 acres of fantastic soil. In 2010 I decided to put in a nice garden. I wanted to be self sufficient so I decided to grow my own planets from seeds, instead of buying them from a nursery. To be prepared for hard times.

I researched online different methods for watering the garden and found someone who used PVC pipes to water his garden more efficiently. With our well, we made our own watering system using the PVC pipes down 50 foot rows. That’s how we got started.

For the first time I started my seeds in-doors under lights. Not knowing how many seeds to plant, I ended up having around 200 tomato plants. I couldn’t afford to compost the ground needed for so many plants, so I went down to a nursery and asked them how they feed their plants.
The nursery showed me minerals which they use for fertilizing. The mix looked like “Miracle Grow”, but was different. They said it was better stuff. It was all minerals from the earth and full of nutrients the plants need. So I purchased the feed from the nursery to use for my garden. A gallon of water and a tablespoon of the feed mix to fertilize the plants while they were seedlings.

That year I had the best garden of my life! It was first time I had started my plants indoors before planting outside. (I used to throw the seeds in the ground and see what happens). And it was the first time using my new watering system and the minerals I got from the nursery.

This brings us to where I am now. I moved to Rigby Idaho to be near family and left my 5 acres of lush land for a small plot with nothing but rocks. I wanted to continue gardening, but was worried and prayed about how to approach my gardening in this new area with so many challenges.

People told me not to get excited about gardening because of rocks, wind, and frost.

In February, I started looking up ideas about gardening and found the mittleider gardening method. To my surprise, I found out later that it was basically the same thing I had been doing in Montana with my most successful garden to date.

The difference was I didn’t have my beautiful soil. I quickly learned that using this gardening method, you can mix your own soil using a variety of methods. You can also use the soil in your yard if you want, it’s up to you. In my case, I couldn’t dig into the rocky ground, so I grow everything above it in boxes using my mixed soil.

The mittleider gardening method made gardening a lot more fun and a lot less work.

The purpose of this blog is to share my joy and experiences and to help you get started on your own successful garden. I can quick-start you into a fruitful gardening season using the methods I record in my blog.

I feel that now is the time to become self sufficient in our lives. Gardening is one the ways to do that. There is food storage, water filtering, eating a proper diet, exercising, spiritual preparedness, and other things we can do that will bring us peace and health in this life. This blog can also be a way to connect us to each other to be good friends and neighbors. I look forward to hearing from you.
